The passage of time is evident through cracked concrete and subsiding structures and this instability is further reflected through distortions as buildings are adopted for uses often abandoned to their initial intention. Each painting starts at an abandoned location, often institutionalised buildings, then the paintings are built through layers of techniques which rely on chance and control, such as pouring, smearing and the use of dispersing of paint. This chaotic process is then layered with more considered painterly responses mirroring the flux, fragile equilibrium of architecture and nature within each site. This idea and processes carries on during the making of these paintings, by leaving them on site for several days or weeks. During the absence of myself and by allowing the paintings to be open to the environment of the abandoned locations, over a course of time, allows the painting processes to carry on during the absence by allowing this passage of time and flux to affect the works. This occurs during weather changes and the surroundings of the locations, due to its forever decaying structure. Within these paintings I want the associations of the places to be present within each piece; by naming them after each location, weather condition and date from which they were made, to help with the connection between the processes and place. I am interested in the idea of how we project ideas onto inanimate objects and unused buildings or interior spaces can become the personification of a danger or threat that we feel may be prevalent within it. I try to link this idea with the paintings, by dissecting sections of the places and painting from them in an abstract language. The intent is to develop an abstract visual vocabulary by doing this, using an innate sense of relationships, to creating something new yet with a sense of subconscious familiarity that are controlled within the space of a painting. They don't try to depict reality, they rely more on colour, contrast and texture to convey my feelings and make things visible to the viewer in some respects.
