Tyrian Purple

- Tyrian Purple -

Description by MonaOates

This painting is based on the idea and creation of Tyrian Purple, a pigment that was made of cannibalistic snails. Their goal was the desirable ingredient. At first it was yellow/golden but as soon it was touched by the sun it turned into a deep red. rnIn the medieval ages this reaction was connected to the light of God. Since the sun was the highest light form and power and gold the most precious, hence godly, colour, Tyrian purple was a creation by god. rnIf you are curious check out the book: The alchemy of Paint by Spike Bucklowrn© Mona L. I am not an artist, only an artisan. I am almost ashamed to admit that many times I do not focus on the idea in others\' creations but I rather observe the materials it was made of. Also when I\'m working with something I like to examine, to crumble, to smell the raw materials. It happens that I even taste them :) In many cases I look at my finished work as the composition of various materials. I can recognise every little detail in them, from the particles of pigment to the fingerprints. In full view your painting shines in icredible colours! I can feel their flavour :)

Thank you zero. I am glad that I reach could someone who thinks about creativity so differently. It is something that artist sometimes forget about. But still we are just as physical as we are visual.
I am just fascinated how our relationship to color has change over the centuries especially with the understanding of science. Nowadays color is more of a expendability and we change it whenever we want without thinking about its mystical origin.
