It seems the smiley is the component which structures the whole experience of the painting. It\'s realm is the real, whereas the surrounding is part of the symbolic structure, which necessarily excludes the real to come into existence. Excluded in this society is not only a certain revolutionary stance (the graffiti-figure with his fist up in the air) but on a larger level also enjoyment of life in general (the smiley). To cut a long story short, without the smiley-figure this painting would be extensively boring and could not even exist... ;)
