______________________________________________________________ Art is a means to express, communicate and explore my imagination, free of boundaries. My work allows me to unleash emotions by stepping aside to allow my subconscious to derive the creative process. There is an absence of thought which evokes endless possibilities and outcomes. ______________________________________________________________ My work is heavily influenced by the Japanese Aesthetic of Wabi Sabi. ‘Wabi,’ is defined as austere beauty, harmony, tranquility and balance. ‘Sabi,’ recognizes that beauty is fleeting, welcoming the rusting and weathering patina that becomes over time. Together, Wabi Sabi is the idea that beauty is found within imperfections in nature, while accepting and embracing the natural cycle of growth and decay. I aim to capture an aesthetic similar to that of Wabi Sabi. _______________________________________________________________ I am also inspired by the abstract expressionists and the concept of action painting. My work is created through actions. The stains and enamels that I use are dribbled, splashed or poured onto the canvas rather than carefully applied. I work with my hands as opposed to a brush because it makes me feel more connected to my art. While I use a variety of mediums and processes throughout my work, my methodology is consistent. My art is created through experimentation and happenings by chance. My work shows spontaneity in movement and action. My creative process derives from subconscious thoughts; I do not pre-visualize, I feel and I create. ______________________________________________________________ My primary interest lies within both ceramics and painting. I treat clay a much as I do a painting, I approach it as though it were a blank canvas. Through dealing with texture, color, patina and overall composition, I am dealing with ceramics through a painterly perspective. My abstract approach to material hopefully reflects my interest in nature and the beauty found within. For me, the natural beauty of the raw material is my endless challenge to connect the world of paining and clay and maintain a sense of natural mystery.
