This series consists of the search of expressing a natural patina through ceramic forms consisting of organic textures and an earthy color palette. I fire my work unglazed in a Raku kiln. When the pieces reach temperature, they are removed and reduced moderately in combustable materials to achieve a smoked surface. They are then taken out of the reduction chamber and applied with materials such as ferric chloride, salt, copper oxide, copper carbonate and sawdust. The way the substances react with the hot surface of the clay leaves unpredictable markings, textures and colors. I am fascinated by the unpredictable nature of working in this particular way. The outcome of my work relies on chance. It is given a uniqueness and personality.
